5 Builders Finishes You Need to Replace Immediately

August 17, 2017

5 Builder’s Finishes You Need to Replace Immediately

When you first move into a new home, everything feels great. It’s fresh, it’s clean, it’s new, and it’s all yours. There won’t be any memories of the families that lived in your home before you. It is all you. It is your blank canvas to make with what you will, but it can’t be truly your masterpiece until you get rid of these builder’s finishes and install your own. Builder’s finishes are the accents that are needed in a home that the builder includes, but doesn’t put any money into. Once you have the designs ready, it’s time to get rid of these five builder’s finishes:

  • Wall Color

Walls are painted a bright, simple color when you first move in. Unless you are happy with your entire home being the same shade of whatever cheap paint they used to make the house look finished, you will want to repaint ASAP. Treat each room as a unique space, but remember that you still want cohesion throughout your home.

  • Trimming

Trimming are the boards that wrap around your room. They are used to connect the ceiling or floor to the walls, frame doorways and windows. There are many different kinds of interior trimming, but what you need to know is that trimming connects and ties a room together. When you are decorating, either install custom trimming in your room or repaint the builder’s trimming to match the décor.

  • The Standard Door Handles

Builders have to include door handles, because, simply put, you need to be able to open and close the doors in your home when you move in. They are typically plain and should be replaced immediately with a set that matches the look you want for your home. Try to keep door handles uniform throughout the house to promote unity and cohesion.

  • Your Lighting Fixtures

Get rid of the lights the builders installed immediately! Lighting can really transform your room, and you do not want to stick with the standard lights. Your room deserves lighting that is both beautiful and unique, which is why you should buy Hinkley Lighting fixtures to decorate your home. They are timeless, beautiful, and will fit in whatever type of room you are designing.

  • The Paper Blinds

Some builders install paper blinds into your home as a standard practice. This is to give you some privacy and, therefore, some time to choose the window treatments that suit your tastes. They are a great, thoughtful addition by any builder, but they are terribly ugly! Once you know the design each room is going to take, go get those custom window treatments. Nothing completes a room better than a window. Whether you go for functionality or pure design or somewhere in-between, your room will look a million times better than it did with those paper blinds.

When you are decorating and designing your new home, you want to remember that it is a home, not separate rooms. You want your home to flow throughout. That is why for fixtures, such as door handles or lighting, you should either keep the same item throughout the house or instead stick with the same company to ensure you have similar designs. Making a new house a home is a process, but it is a fun one!
